In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
